Warning flags in job adverts

24 Jun 2019

Searching through job advertisements can be a minefield, particularly if you’re new to the job-hunting game. Here’s our list of red flags to look out when searching through job listings to help you decide whether a role is right for you.

  • Mismatching job titles and descriptions: If an employer is having difficulty in clearly identifying the job description, this may indicate that the role will lack structure, development and goals.
  • One-sided expectations: Company culture and employee benefits are very important for job satisfaction and keeping motivated within your role. If the job article is just stating what they expect from you and not identifying company perks and how they’re going to look after you, you could end up feeling overworked and undervalued.
  • Vague or too many requirements: Sounding like too many requirements within the role? It’s likely the company doesn’t have a good work life balance or a focus on employee wellness within its culture.
  • Unspecified earning potentials: If the earning potential is too broad it may mean that the role is commission based, which isn’t for everyone, so ensuring clarity on this from the outset would save any unwanted surprises.
  • If in doubt, contact a recruitment agency: At 1st Recruitment we specialise in matching candidates to suitable positions, and can help you to identify any aspects of a role that might not be inline with your wants and needs.
